Approach To Therapy

Scenic view of a rocky coastline of Big Sur with trees, waves crashing on the shore, and the ocean extending to the horizon under a blue sky.

Maybe there's a life transition or identity struggle you're navigating that's left you anxious, stressed, confused, unheard, or feeling unmoored. Maybe there's a hurtful pattern you find yourself inexplicably repeating, but can't seem to stop. Maybe you've been grappling with the heaviness of depression or grief, but can't seem to get out from under it.

My therapeutic practice is holistic, curious, compassionate, and focused on true transformation. My aim is to provide empathic support, dignity, and exploration for you to have a more fully realized sense of self and peace. I practice by the Narrative phrase: "The person is not the problem; the problem is the problem".

Finding the right fit therapeutically can be an energy- exhaustive task, especially when already dealing with emotions like anxiety, stress, depression, or burn out. You deserve a nonjudgmental space of boundless considerate care in which you're able to foster a deeper connection with yourself, your body, and access the power of personal agency.

Services

Individual Therapy
Working together will always be a collaborative effort. Through deconstruction of the challenges you’re facing, exploration into identity and strength, and unconscious motivations that may be influencing your life, we can begin to heal and rebuild from a place of self- compassion and understanding.

Some of my specialties are:
- Stress & Anxiety
- Grief & Depression
- ADHD
- Neurodivergency
- Addiction
- Relationship challenges
- Identity struggles
- Religious/spiritual concerns
- Meaning and purpose
- Sex and sex therapy

Couples’ Therapy

Couples’ sessions hinge on taking the blame away from any particular party, and focusing collaboratively on the problems themselves. We will explore the priorities, needs, dreams and desires you share as a couple, the spaces where issues arose, and process through them in order to realign yourselves with one another and take challenges head- on as a team.

Sex Therapy
Issues within sex therapy encompass areas far outside of sex itself; self- perception, identity, self- worth, shame, body image, guilt, and desirability are all components that have the potential to effect many facets of our lives and experiences. Working in sex therapy is about deep healing and acceptance, addressing the root, and embracing your shadow to be able to fully integrate your identity and experience true transformation.

About Me

Abigail McMillen, MA, AMFT #151898
I’ve been fortunate to have my practice informed by a variety of experiences well before graduating with a Masters from Antioch University. As a sibling of someone with Down Syndrome and ASD, I’ve worked widely in neurodivergent and developmental programs, particularly for youth, and have a deep love for working with folks on the spectrum.

My love for somatic integration and a holistic approach to healing began with a transformative experience with Zazen Meditation and Bikram Hot Yoga practices; I have been a guided meditation facilitator now for more than 3 years. Through my own years of practicing Shadow Work Meditation, I believe in its incredible value and place in therapy. I have formal training in Narrative and Existential therapy, and served as a relationship counselor and sex educator for a number of years.

I have a rich background in dual diagnosis treatment, and as such provided care for individuals grappling with addiction and concurrent mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, grief, mood and eating disorders, and relationship issues. As a member of the queer community, I pride myself on the inclusivity and dignity I’m able to provide for my clients.

My practice is embedded with appreciation for essential human experiences such as search for philosophical meaning, storytelling, introspection, creative expression, spirituality, and humor. I find joy in tailoring and enriching my sessions for each client individually, and truly believe there is no such thing as “one size fits all”.
